Canalta DBB Orifice Meter Update

"Good idea but you're not going to change an industry."

JWF introduced the Canalta Double Block and Bleed (DBB) orifice meter to an oil and gas focus group in Aberdeen back in late 2015. We already had interest with a couple of operators but one of the comments that came from one of the Metering consultants was, “Good idea I can see the benefits but you’re not going to change an industry”. Four years on and we thought we would provide an update on where we are now.

JWF introduced the Canalta DBB orifice fitting into the North Sea in 2014/15. Since that time JWF have worked hard to promote the DBB orifice concept with the oil and gas industry. In 2015, JWF ran a product presentation and live demonstration at TUV NEL in East Kilbride inviting along major operators such as Repsol, CoP, Total and Apache. This allowed operators to get hands on with the device carrying out orifice plate changes and the time scales involved while evaluating the safety advances of this device.

We are excited to report over the past few years we have been successful with a number of operators varying from 4” units to more recently 16”. We have also met all the material challenges that working in the North Sea bring including Super Duplex, OAG Specifications etc. We have also incorporated bends into our pipework we have provided along with reducers etc…trying to help the end users and contractors cut down on time sourcing solutions.



We work with Score (Europe) carrying out gas tests to Valve standard API 6D, ASME B16.34 and ASME B31.3. This proves again the concept and safety of our device testing to 1.5 x design pressure testing pressure up to 368 barg for 10” 1500# DBB unit.


Operators over the past couple of years have commented on the responsiveness and support from JWF at quotation stage, calculations, GA drawings. As well as, the cost advantage against other competitors in the Differential Pressure orifice fitting market and valid alternative to other technologies (Coriolis and Inline USM meters).

The operator does not need to calibrate (or periodically re-calibrate) an ISO or AGA compliant orifice meter to have low flow rate prediction uncertainty in service. Combining this with the ease of plate removal under flowing conditions is proving a big success for JWF / Canalta and North Sea operators alike.
