National Apprenticeship Week
This week is National Apprenticeship Week and we’re proud to have on board four apprentices at JWF and a further two at Stream Measurement.
We’ve had a chat with Cameron Mair, our second year Software Development Graduate apprentice, to hear his thoughts on apprenticeship life!
Why did you take the apprenticeship route for career development?
I chose to take the apprenticeship because it’s an amazing way to gain hands-on experience while studying.
Learning on the job allows me to develop practical skills that I wouldn’t get from a classroom alone, as well as being able to apply what I learn in class to real-world situations. I believe that the apprenticeship will not only help me achieve a greater understanding of theory but also help me develop the practical skills needed to succeed in software development.
What attracted you to the role at JWF?
The modern approach to software development and the willingness to invest time in my development. The summer before my apprenticeship, I worked as an intern and saw how the work it was doing not only helped people understand the processes but also could help clients save money, and in some cases even lives. This made working at JWF very appealing as it’s clear the work I do here is making a meaningful difference.
Tell us about the most interesting project you have worked on?
Developing my own app. JWF trusted me to build an entire application for clients, designed as a central hub for all their water data. This opportunity was brilliant for my development, as it enabled me to build something from the ground up while also engaging directly with clients. Being involved in meetings helped me ensure the application met their needs, providing me with valuable experience in both technical development and client collaboration.
What are your key achievements to date?
My key achievements so far include developing my own app for JWF clients, attaining an AWS Cloud Practitioner certification (supported by JWF), allowing me to further my cloud computing knowledge. I have also become proficient in building dashboards to present data effectively, strengthened my skills in TypeScript and SQL, and gained valuable experience working directly with clients to ensure solutions meet their needs.
What are your career aspirations?
To become a well-rounded and effective developer capable of building impactful products. I want to work on projects that make a real difference and provide a meaningful and helpful role in people's lives. At JWF, I have already started this journey, gaining valuable experience and developing my skills in a supportive environment.
What skills for life have you learned so far?
I’ve learned many valuable life skills so far including how to communicate effectively within a team, manage full-time employment, and maintain a healthy work-life balance. Most importantly, I have gained confidence in my own abilities while also recognising the importance of asking for help when needed.
Why would you recommend the apprenticeship route?
I would highly recommend the apprenticeship route because it enables you to study and earn a qualification while gaining valuable hands-on experience. It’s the best of both worlds. Combining practical learning in the workplace with theoretical knowledge, helping develop real-world skills you can carry throughout your career.

2025 will be the 18th National Apprenticeship Week, having originally started in 2007. The annual week-long celebration brings together businesses and apprentices across the country to shine a light on the positive impact that apprenticeships make to individuals, businesses and the wider economy. Together, we can promote the benefits of apprenticeships and related skills programmes, showcasing progression opportunities, exciting new occupational standards, and lots more.
Let’s work together to make National Apprenticeship Week 2025 the biggest and best yet!
