Power down, green up: Earth Day at JWF
Thanks to our close ties with various industrial sectors, from oil and gas, energy and chemicals, to pharmaceutical and food and beverage, we have a heightened awareness of the critical challenges posed by climate change.
As such, we wanted to mark “Earth Day” today (Tuesday 22nd April) by highlighting a series of meaningful and impactful activities to help draw attention to everyday events where we can all make a difference.
Following the recent launch of our Sustainability Strategy, we’ve set out our commitment to addressing our environmental impact and aligned our net zero targets with the UN’s goal of limiting global warming to no more than 1.5°C.
Not only do we strive to reduce our own negative environmental impact, but we also actively support our clients’ sustainability efforts by providing products and services that enable them to measure and visualise their environmental impact and identify inefficiencies.
Within our own business, we’ve already made some significant strides forward with:
• Attaining ISO 14001 for our environmental management system in 2019, and continuously maintaining this accreditation.
• A salary sacrifice scheme to help employees transition to electric vehicles.
• The installation of three EV charging points which can simultaneously charge five vehicles.
• Motion sensors on office lighting to reduce energy wastage.
• The generation of 97,410 kWh of solar energy from our rooftop in Glasgow; saving more than 20 tonnes of CO₂e emissions.
• Measurement and reporting on our Scope 1, Scope 2, and partially Scope 3 emissions in Glasgow, setting our emissions and net zero targets.
• Switching to a renewable electricity contract - now 100% of the electricity supplied to us in Glasgow is generated from renewable sources.
Moving forward, we’re now focussed on several key areas:
• Improving energy efficiency at our Oldham office to reduce energy consumption and carbon footprint
• Working with our waste management providers to improve recycling practices with the aim to divert 100% of our waste from landfill.
• Engaging with our supply chain to assess its carbon footprint and sustainability criteria – ultimately gaining a better understanding and being able to lower our Scope 3 emissions.
• Continuing to develop our team's knowledge on climate-related laws and regulations, carbon literacy, best recycling practices, and efficient resource consumption.
We also actively support our clients’ sustainability efforts by providing products and services that enable them to measure and visualise their environmental impact and identify inefficiencies.
